Friendly staff, cool playground, beautiful grounds. A fridge and outlets for charging for us cyclists. Everything is clean and it just feels brilliant.

We stayed 20 days at this little nature camping site in De Ruigenhoek, south east of Haarlem. We chose this place having recently migrated to the Balkans and needed a little shot of nostalgia since my wife grew up here. It was a very easy arrival and check in and our host Kees was very welcoming and friendly showing us our designated spot. It is a beautiful area with a variety of majestic trees including oak, birch, beechwood, fir, and spruce skirting the paths and open camping fields. We had requested a larger camping area as we had booked an extra two nights of camping for our friends to set up their tent next to us. Though this cost extra it was well worth it. Sadly, though, the site struggles with large patches of dirt and sand here and there where people have smothered the earth with artificial, non-breathable carpets and outdoor flooring making it dirty and unpleasant for the rest of us. The hosts do their best to combat this, but they’re limited and can’t police everything. As a result we were constantly sweeping dirt and sand from not only floor, but on a windy day (which was a lot - this is Holland), from our shelves and tables as well. Aside from that, the views were cosy and embracing and the other campers were super friendly saying hello every time we crossed paths. The grounds and facilities were clean and very well maintained. It helps that they’re a small camping ground, but even still, you can’t leave an empty bottle or book out without someone putting it where it belongs - very conscientious team here. They’d even taken it upon themselves to help us with our front tent, lowering it for us, out of care, on a stormy day while we were out so as to prevent damage. Thoughtful and considerate. They have six showers, eight toilets, a self contained family toilet and shower, and an outdoor urinal with a saloon style swing door - who wouldn’t enjoy a good ol’ visit to the lavvy with that as your welcome!? This was more than plenty during the week, but on busy weekends, there was a waiting time of about 10 minutes for the showers during peak hours. I took a book or went later - toilets are always open. They also have everything well signed with a chemical toilet disposal area round the back of the shower block so you can discretely spare everyone of the horror that is the caravan toilet. We had no use for it but they had four basins dedicated to washing up as well. No laundry. One detail I liked was the provision of squeegees to squeegee your shower after use. I like that mindset. On the busy weekends, parking got sparse real quick. A little frustrating but there‘s parking 2 minutes walk up the road. If you have a load of stuff with you, they’ve provided the campers with rickshaws to transport equipment, food etc to and from the car park. Just unload at the parking lot and take it where it needs to go once the car is parked. The campsite is a handy bike ride from oosterduinsemeer (5mins) and Langevelderslag beach (10-15mins) with cafes and restaurants at both locations - Hoogies post-swim was a favourite of ours. It was a little uncertain finding canoeing or padel boating for hire in the area, but I can say for sure that de Voltiere cafe/restaurant hire out padel boards for €5 an hour to use on the lake. After 3 days of driving, we were very happy to be shown to our spot so we could get started relaxing straight away. The campsite is very peaceful for the Netherlands where the white noise hum of nearby highways can always be heard. To ensure the aura of peacefulness, hosts request quiet at 22:00, and complete silence by 23:00. A great place for families with young children like us. Thanks to Kees and Bernadette and their team. A wonderful experience and we’ll be back for sure.

Stayed here on a cycling tour. Very friendly staff who were super helpful about the local area. Had a great night there. Would certainly recommend.
