We booked a weekend stay at the Slaapton. It's a small, cozy spot with a clean, private toilet and shower. The surroundings are absolutely beautiful here on the property. Peace and quiet are guaranteed.

It's autumn, after a summer in which coronavirus forced campsites to close during peak season. This is, of course, a huge blow for campsite owners. But the campsite we're currently visiting suffers from something else entirely: deferred maintenance. And that's a real shame. Because you can see the potential! What did we find in October...? We arrive. We're shown to a field – which the owner said wouldn't be as swampy as the fields at the back. We narrowly avoid getting stuck. (Whether we'll manage to get out after five days of rain will become clear tomorrow!) There are branches strewn across the field, which we've just tossed aside. And a play structure is in ruins. The showers and toilets are reasonably clean. But of the approximately seven lights, only two are on, so we're showering and washing dishes in the dim light. And in a time of coronavirus, they should consider finding another way to open the access doors to the showers and toilets. Now, it's a slide you have to hold. Both the trash cans have lids that everyone has to touch, which isn't very practical. A plexiglass wall has been neatly placed between the dishwashing sinks. I hope the owners can rekindle their enthusiasm and turn it into a well-maintained campsite! The grounds deserve it, and so do the paying campers.
